CSIE’s director was invited to speak on BBC Radio 4 last Friday about the recent controversy surrounding reports of pupils “identifying” as animals in schools.  The programme is available on the BBC website.

During the discussion, our director challenged attempts to link this behaviour with adult games and innuendos, emphasising that such associations are unfounded and unhelpful.  She also suggested that schools ensure they offer safe spaces for discussion, encouraging pupils to ask any questions they have, particularly about things which confuse or discomfort them.  If staff are unsure how to answer a question appropriately, they or a pupil can undertake to look into the issue.

Overall, she argued that educators should respond with curiosity instead of alarm, asking what message a child’s behaviour might be communicating. Whether it reflects a need for attention, belonging, emotional support, or something else, an adult’s response is more likely to be effective, if pupils’ underlying needs are understood.

This position reflects CSIE’s commitment to promoting thoughtful, evidence-informed approaches to understanding behaviour and protecting the wellbeing of children and young people, encouraging educators to look beyond headlines and focus on what helps pupils thrive.
