CSIE is born

Mark Vaughan sets up the Centre for Studies on Integration in Education, responding to the 1981 Education Act’s requirement to educate disabled children in mainstream schools.

1985

International work

CSIE visits Massachusetts, to learn how visionary local law on inclusive education shaped national laws, and publishes a report.

1987

CSIE expands
Belinda Shaw joins Mark Vaughan as co-director. CSIE continues to place its work on a human rights and social justice platform.

1987

Integration statistics
CSIE publishes the first in a long series of reports on local authority school placement Trends; for many years the only place where information at local authority level was available.

1987-89

Legal challenge
CSIE supports 4 families to go to the European Court of Human Rights

1989

Inclusion Charter launched

CSIE’s Inclusion Charter is launched.  Over the years, the Inclusion Charter was signed by many organisations and authorities around the world.

1992

Inclusion Week
National Inclusion Week to celebrate 10 years of CSIE.

1996

Newham story shared

The London Borough of Newham shows that by transforming schools, not children, inclusion works and exam results improve. CSIE publishes the story.

1997

Index team formed
Prompted by an Index to support one child’s inclusion in Australia, CSIE brings together an interdisciplinary team to develop a resource for English schools.

1998

Time capsule buried
CSIE buries a time capsule on the grounds of Newham’s 6th Form College, with plans to dig it up in the year 2020.

Norwegian study visit
CSIE hosts study visit of 53 Norwegian headteachers who leave extremely impressed by inclusion in Newham.

More international work
CSIE gives talks and runs workshops across Scandinavia, Europe, India, Hong Kong, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

2000

Index for Inclusion published

After 3 years of intense work and collaboration with schools in London, Oldham and Manchester, the first edition of the Index for Inclusion is published.

2001

Focus on learning supporters

CSIE publishes guidance on learning supporters and hosts two national conferences on their role in mainstream schools.

2002

Inclusion week

National Inclusion Week to celebrate 20 years of CSIE. Hundreds of schools, professionals, parents, pupils, academics and others across the UK join in with activities.

2002

Index for Inclusion 2nd edition
The 2nd edition of the Index for Inclusion was distributed to all schools in England and all local authorities in Wales by the Department for Education and Skills.

2004-06

UN lobbying

CSIE sent 2 representatives from the UK to New York to strengthen the human rights perspective in Article 24 (Education) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

2005

Funding challenge
Significant core funding from Barrow Cadbury Trust, which had sustained CSIE for many years, comes to an end.

2007

Staff changes
Mark Vaughan leaves CSIE 25 years after setting it up, and Belinda Shaw retires. Trustees appoint Artemi Sakellariadis as CSIE’s new director.

2008-09

Preparing for Equality Act 2010

CSIE is commissioned to produce a guide for schools to develop a single equality policy, and plays an active role in national preparations for the Equality Act 2010.

2009

Learning from Canada

CSIE hosts Canadian education leaders, marking 40 years of Hamilton-Wentworth’s “Each Belongs” inclusion strategy with events throughout the country.

2010

Front line work begins
CSIE launches equality workshops for staff and governors, in response to the Equality Act 2010

2011

Index for Inclusion 3rd edition
Substantially revised & expanded edition of the Index published. The Index has been translated into 40+ languages and is still in use throughout the world.

2013

Another funding challenge
Core funding from the Platinum Trust, the last remaining core funding that CSIE receives, comes to an end.

2013-16

National EDI group
CSIE chairs national Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group as part of the Expert Subject Advisory Groups (ESAG) originally set up by the Department for Education.

2014

New workshops for pupils

CSIE introduces pupil workshops on disability equality, following EHRC’s recommendation that schools should do more to help pupils learn about disability equality.

2014-16

Equality: Making It Happen
CSIE works with schools in Bristol and London to create a new equality toolkit, responding to focus group requests for a new resource.

2016

Innovative Practice award

Equality: Making It Happen is published and wins an Innovative Practice International recognition from the Zero Project, for a world with zero barriers.

2017

Direct support for schools

CSIE introduces more direct support for schools and other settings, in the form of support for equality audits engaging the whole school community

2018-21

More international work

CSIE contributes to European-funded IMAS II project, on Improving Assistance in schools, and produces an online Knowledge Box for Learning Supporters.

2019

Contrasting responses to diversity
CSIE publishes the last in the 30-year-long series of reports on local authority school placement Trends; by now information at local authority level is widely available.

2019

Invitation to Windsor Castle
CSIE’s director attends a reception at Windsor Castle marking 100 years of NCVO where 200 charities (from 14,000 NCVO members) are invited.

2020

Unbeaten by Covid

CSIE’s director runs 67.6 miles in 26 days during lockdown, while Inclusive Solutions host an online PATH event gathering supporters to help carve a way forward.

2021

Intelligent Lives
CSIE hosts an online screening of Dan Habib’s film “Intelligent Lives”, bringing together viewers from 23 countries.

2021-22

CSIE Health Check

New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) is commissioned to carry out a Health Check of CSIE and produces a very positive report.

2024-25

CSIE Archive created

With professional support and volunteers, CSIE creates an archive of its 42-year history, expected to be hosted by the Centre for Disability Studies, Leeds
